What is Zen Shiatsu?

Zen Shiatsu comes from the healing traditions of Japan. Shizuto Masunaga (1925-1981), the founder of Zen Shiatsu, was responsible for consolidating different practices and philosophies and giving them a specific form. Masunaga's teachings gained popularity in the 1960s when an interest in alternative medicine was taking off in the United States and Western Europe, but today there are few shiatsu therapists practicing in his original style (like Maisie).

What to expect

Traditional Zen Shiatsu goes deep into your muscles and your energetic body. Performed fully clothed on a floor futon, the practitioner uses elbows and knees to lean on, twist, and stretch the whole body. Abdominal work is generally a part of each treatment, as the primary method for meridian-based diagnosis and treatment, to balance different pathways in the body.
